Springfield
At a Glance: The town of Springfield was first settled as Protectworth, and the Town Meeting House, built in 1797, has been restored and is still in use. Population: 893.

Overview: The small town offers big outdoor opportunities. There are several lakes and ponds, including Lake Kolelemook, which is close to the center of town. Both branches of the Sugar and Blackwater Rivers have their sources in Springfield.

Abandoned roads meander through the nearly 7,000-acre Gile State Forest and offer an opportunity for hikers, snowshoers, skiers and snowmobilers to enjoy its beauty all year long.

This beautiful area is a home to vast wildlife, such as bear, mink and moose. Kimpton Brook, Morgan Pond and Butterfield Pond, all popular fishing spots are within its borders.

You'll also want to visit McDaniel's Marsh, a great place to kayak, Dutchman Pond and the Protectworth Trail, an 8.7-mile section of the Sunapee-Ragged-Kearsarge Greenway system.
